new expiry days for NSE
NSE Changes Nifty Expiry Day to Monday – Effective from April 5th, 2025
The changes will take effect from 4 April 2025, with existing contracts being adjusted to the new expiry day on 3 April 2025, at the end of the trading day. All new contracts created after the effective date will adhere to the revised Monday expiry.
Starting April 4, 2025, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will revise the expiry days for Nifty 50 derivatives contracts. Weekly futures and options (F&O) contracts linked to the Nifty 50 index will now expire on Mondays instead of the current Thursdays. Similarly, monthly, quarterly, and half-yearly Nifty 50 contracts will shift their expiry from the last Thursday to the last Monday of the respective expiry month. citeturn0search1
This change aligns with broader regulatory measures introduced by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to enhance investor protection and market stability. In October 2024, SEBI mandated that exchanges reduce the number of weekly options contracts to one per exchange, aiming to mitigate risks associated with increased retail participation in options trading. citeturn0news11
Consequently, NSE has decided to retain weekly expiries exclusively for the Nifty 50 index, discontinuing weekly contracts for other indices such as Bank Nifty, Nifty Financial Services, and Nifty Midcap Select. These indices will now have only monthly expiries, set for the last Monday of each month. citeturn0search2
These adjustments reflect NSE’s commitment to adhering to regulatory guidelines while maintaining a structured derivatives trading environment. Market participants are advised to update their trading strategies accordingly to accommodate these new expiry schedules.
